- January 11, 2018
Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Youth Empowerment in Borno State northeast Nigeria is set to flag off series of community sanitation and peace dialogue in the communities along the Dala Shuwari cluster on the outskirts of Maiduguri.
The sanitation and dialogue activity will serve as a cash for work initiative targeting 200 youth from the Dala Shuwari cluster comprising of Masamalube, Abbajideri, Gubdori, Dala Yazara, Kangaderi, Alajiri, Ashemari, and Bajorinamely communities.
The initiative was designed to provide idle youth, affected by the insurgency with an opportunity to earn funds for their personal economic development and entrepreneurship while contributing positively to their community.
The ministry will identify, screen and select youth to participate in weekly peace dialogues and community environment safely exercises that will focus on cleaning up refuse and debris in public areas.
The selected youth will receive a daily stipend for their efforts and will be equipped with personal protection equipment including rubber boots, hand globes, face masks to ensure their health and safety for the duration of the exercise.
Through the implementation of this activity, the ministry seeks to increase trust and cooperation among youth while providing them with financial resources to reject the lure of extremist groups who are known to target vulnerable youth for recruitment.
